What Is an Adjective? In simple terms, an adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or a pronoun. Think of them as the "special effects" of language—they add color, texture, size, and personality to the people and things we talk about.
Without adjectives, a sentence like "The dog sat on the rug" is functional but boring. With adjectives, it becomes: "The shaggy dog sat on the velvet rug."
Types of Adjectives
Adjectives do more than just describe colors or shapes; they can point things out, ask questions, or show ownership.

Degrees of Comparison
When you want to compare things, adjectives change their form. This is usually done using the following three levels:
Positive: The basic form (fast).
Comparative: Compares two things, usually ending in "-er" (faster).
Superlative: Compares three or more things, usually ending in "-est" (fastest).
Note: For longer words, we use "more" or "most" instead of suffixes (e.g., more beautiful instead of beautifuller).
The Standard Order of Adjectives
In English, we don't just throw adjectives together randomly. There is an unspoken rule for the order they should follow. If you break this, you’ll sound a bit "off" to a native speaker.
Opinion (Great, ugly)
Size (Tiny, huge)
Age (Old, brand-new)
Shape (Square, round)
Color (Red, bluish)
Origin (Italian, lunar)
Material (Silk, wooden)
Purpose (Sleeping bag, running shoes)
Example: You would say "A lovely, small, old, square, green, Irish, plastic whistle," but you would never say "A plastic, green, Irish, small, lovely whistle."
